Researchers in United Kingdom Bristol University have used instruments to measure the bone shape, density and body fat of more than 4,000 teen-agers at the age of 15. The results showed that the bones of respondents with higher levels of body fat are stronger. This relation between bones and body fat is obvious for girl, if the body fat in girls’ body increase 5 kg, the thickness of the small bone will be increased by 8%. The researchers said that at the same weight, girls’ body fat is usually higher than the boys and body fat is also more important for girl at skeletal development. Wellcome Trust Medical Research Council recruited 14000 pregnant women volunteers and tracked the health status of women and children from 1991 to 1992. The study also confirmed that the amount of body fat for girl is more important at skeletal development than boys. Researchers previously believed that there is relation between the amount of muscle and bone growth, but finally no agreement has been reached at this point.
The latest study from Eating Disorders Research center in University of London King’s College showed that some models which are called “size zero” are in touch with stars frequently, which lead to increased cases of eating disorders in society. Doctors had warned that some supermodel with excessive weight loss not only endanger their own health and fertility, but also become a girl’s “bad example.” Jon Tobias’s reports were quoted on Daily Mail in British,” many girls want to be getting thinner with immense pressure, but they need to understand that this behavior may jeopardize bone development, so that an increased risk of osteoporosis.” The rate of suffering from osteoporosis and hip fractures for women is three times than men, therefore, women should have strong bones at a young age. Some studies have found that lack of calcium caused by not intake of sufficient vitamin D and less exercise can?t allow the bone strength to reach optimal levels.
“Many people believe that sports can simultaneously lose weight and make bones strong, but this is not entirely correct,” Tobias said, “If you only do walking and other low-impact exercise, of course, weight can be lose, but it is useless for making the bones strong. In order to offset the side effects of weight loss, some high-impact sports such as running and jumping are necessary”.
